Blood flow through the legs is comprised of a system of arteries that bring freshly oxygenated blood from the heart and veins, which return the oxygen-depleted blood back to the heart. In normally functioning veins, internal valves allow blood to flow to the heart but prevent flow in the opposite direction. Contraction of the calf muscles assists blood flow in the direction of the heart.
