Spider veins, also known as telangiectasias, are one of the most common cosmetic issues in the adult female population. While heredity plays a role in a small percentage of men who will develop spider veins in their lifetime, the much higher frequency of women with this problem develop it as a result of the influence of female hormones from menstrual cycles, pregnancy, birth control and hormone replacement therapy.
These small blood vessels are most often seen on the upper front and lateral thighs, inner thighs just above the knees and on the feet and ankles. It is important to understand that these veins are connected to larger blue veins, called reticular, or ‘feeder’ veins, which put pressure on the smaller veins, making them dilate and become increasingly visible. At VLS, you can be assured that your treatment will include identifying the feeder veins and treating them as well for long-lasting resolution.
Spider veins may or may not be symptomatic; sometimes sensations of burning or itching and leg heaviness are reported. Because these symptoms are not considered a threat to your overall health, insurance companies typically look at them as cosmetic and will not offer coverage for their treatment. However, sclerotherapy with Eurofoam-SV®, used sometimes in combination with surface laser, provides an excellent and cost-effective treatment to improve the appearance of these veins.
"When I enjoyed Disneyland last summer, I thought of you. When I rode the
wildest rides with my son at Busch Gardens, I remembered you. I played golf,
swam, shopped in the comfort of shorts and I didn’t feel ugly."
